Rolling Worship
Introducing Rolling Worship
Rolling worship is a structure of half-hour worship segments that allow non-members to “come when they can, leave when they like”, while members build a balanced diet of worship, fellowship and teaching. Many details are to be worked out in practice, and we are bound to make many mistakes as we learn new ways of worship, but we envisage something like the following:
9.30am Traditional Worship. This will usually include traditional hymns and/or choir items, but no sermon, except where the Core is a celebration of communion or baptism.
10am approxRefreshments
10.30am “Core” for all. Usually, the Core will be the teaching time; there may be a drama or a video clip, and sometimes some or all of this teaching will be provided in a choice of modules so that those with different learning styles or preferences can learn in the way most appropriate for them. There will always be at least one module approachable for non-churchgoers. Where the core is teaching-based, it will not usually include much worship in music. Sometimes, the Core will be a shared celebration of Communion or Baptism, with worship in music. Children’s and youth groups will be provided during the Core.
11am approx Coffee Time. This will include time for prayer ministry.
11.30am Contemporary Worship. This will not usually include a sermon (except where the Core is communion or baptism), and will last a maximum of 30 minutes. It will be family-friendly but include reflection as well as up-tempo songs, ending by 12.
Further thought will need to be given to special services such as Remembrance Day.
Every Sunday will have one single theme that will be followed through all these half-hour segments; we envisage that some worshippers will come to the whole of rolling worship, but most will find they have a balanced diet of worship, learning and fellowship if they come from 9.30-11 or 10.30-12. Though several Anglican churches around the UK have used Rolling Worship successfully, the version above is not a copy of any other blueprint. This programme was created by the leadership team here in Galleywood in response to what we sensed God was calling us to.
